have you noticed similarities between the two? Tanis reminds me of Aragorn, Eowyn reminds me of Laurana (the whole vainly chasing after her love thing), Gimli - Flint, Legolas - Gilthanas, etc.

Hrmm, this is going to get interesting I can tell you that. Especially if Elan posts here.

I'll start by saying there are minor similarities between some characters, but ultimately, LOTR can't really be compared with much at all.
I'm one of the biggest ever DL fans, but they're both so different (in general) that I really don't think you can compare them.

LOTR is more complex and makes you think more that DL. While DL is a reasonably easy read (if you read one book after the other without breaking the trend) it still holds it's own in my eyes.

yeah but the elves and ogres and the classic battle of good against evil....

Minas Tirith reminds me of Palanthas. the white city that never gets beaten down until war comes along.

I see where you're going with the characters..... however, in terms of story, while the clasic battle of good and evil could be comparable, the execution of this battle couldn't be more different between the two. But it's easy to find Tolkien influences in most modern fantasy.... he is the father of modern fantasy after all.

I see where you're going just goes to show how dense I am. the worlds Middle Earth and Krynn are really different but when I think of the situations and the characters I can't help but to relate the two.

Other than its an obviously Tolkien inspired fantasy I cannot see any major similarities. Gimli is not Flint just because they're both dwarves. Flint is an older father figure afterall. Also in DL the arc of the saga is much different, in LOTR you basically have 2 major battles, in DL there are many, and really there is a whole campaign, and some major cities/places fall to the enemy as well.

Also, magic is much much much more overt in DL.
