Facebook is useless for all art, ever. Especially for writers.

LJ is ok for writers though.

I have a dA account and a flikr as well.
Flikr is mainly used for my photography class, while dA is my main account.

Get one! It's a great way for... people to ignore you, only commenting to thank you for favouriting their works and giving them more publicity. And not give you any advice whatsoever on improving yours, setting up a circle of frustration and...

    Huh. Never mind.

flickr is exactly the same - as is any large image host. Simply put most people can't give good crits and those that do are not going to surf the site handing them out at random because the majority don't want crits - they want compliments only (furthermore not everyone is well versed in written communication and many crit givers can end up sounding incredibly negative - which of course gets bad reception by strangers to that person)

In short if you want attention and advise you've got to put the time and effort into networking and promoting yourself - find the groups (does devient art have groups like flickr has groups?) that promote good art and critique - use the image host to show your work in forum dedicated to furthering ones talents.

You won't ever simply put up shots and get the answers given to you - you've got to go out and find them.

I can't really draw (lol), but I love going by there and looking at all the wonderful creations. I've done a few digital things before (mostly mapping, no character work), so I guess I could create an account but just haven't. Do people look at maps on there?

I'm sure there are people on there interested in maps, although they're surely not as popular as character drawings or paintings etc. I'd say just give it a try! :)

I may go ahead and do that. I may want to commission some artwork, and I find it difficult to find the kind of artists I'm looking for in their forums. Is there an easy way to find artists that match the style you are looking for (or just a list of commission-earning artists)?

I'm not sure about that, because so far I've only found those artists more or less without looking for them and I've actually never commissioned anything. There are groups on dA though, so you could look for groups with either artists doing commissions or with artists creating the kind of artwork you like.
