Seeing as this is a fantasy forum, Im guessing many of you play the RPing game Dungeons & Dragons. Well let me give you a word of advice, DO NOT BUY THE 4th EDITION BOX SET!!! They got rid of gnomes, druids, barbarians, monks, alot of spells, and more. All of the 1st level wizard spells are combat based except for jump and all of the feats are combat based. It's not supposed to be a pen and paper hack and slash game. FFS it's a ROLE PLAYING GAME! Anyways me and my friends are starting a website called www.open4th.com to create our own open source edition of dnd.

I never intended to buy it anyway lol ;)
I'm content with 3.5 ed (almost same like 3.0 :O)

But yeah, WOTC will do anything for money :/

Nah, WotC have been good boys so far. Nothing bad really.

Have not seen the new Ed though, will flick through it at my local shop, bt probably won't buy it.

might be that they removed content to add content later possibly?
Till the book is fully out we won't know, but I doubt that they removed all those character classes - might be that they changed how spells and character classes form up - and gnomes are not gone, they are just evil now (or neutral or something NPC) and got replaced with some half deamoness sort of thing

ps - how many people actually used a gnome character?

Surprisingly many. Also, thing about wizards, when they get rid of content, usually it's done until the fan outcry becomes too deafening to ignore. They'll make steps to rectify these mistakes eventually, but odds are it'll be a long wait

    I played many gnomes before.

Oh and listen to what they did to alignments. The alignments are now Good, Lawful Good, Unaligned, Evil, and Chaotic Evil.
WTF!?! My favourite 3 alignments were LE, CG, and CN. Now they got rid of that? God damn they ruined the game.

Anyways, me and my friends website will now be called www.openarcana.com because there is no Open Gaming License for 4th edition and the four in the site name could lead to lawsuits which we would like to avoid. But yeah, if all goes according to plan, it should be up within the next week if anyone is interested.

I'm sorry. How can you not have Chaotic Good? That's like the best alignment for anti-hero's.

Have any of you actually tried 4th edition? At first I was really specticle but we tried it out tonight, and it is way better. It is way simpler and it has gotten rid of the huge quantity and ease of powergaming that 3.5 had. It's meant for RPing not godmoding like 3.5 was made for.

they might have decided to cut down content to help balance things out - and then might release new content in the form of new books to get (they are famous for this!) so that they can balance out the godmodding
so there might be a new mage book or some such

how can you say that 4th edition allows for more RPing? They took away almost all the feats and spells that aren't combat based and they took away 4 crucial alignments!

Simpler =/= better. That's what great about DnD. All that complex crap you had to go through to get your guys all super. The number crunching (sort of) and random bits and bobs you have to filter through is lots of fun.

I think its more fun once you get into it,but it can be off putting to newer players. And thanks to the PC games there is renewed interest in DnD so I can see the attraction to simplifying the game to get more players.
Might be it ends up like magic the gathering - simple to get into and if you go far enough it gets more and more challenging

Spoken like a true power gamer Met. As for me I don't care about have super powerful characters, just having fun and screwing around and I can do that in any edition, but it's nice with 4th edition because some of the people I play with don't always think that way and it ruins it, and 4th really limits that, I love it.

It's not about the super characters. That's just a nice bonus towards the end. The fun part is all the complex stuff you have to wade through and all those stats you have to keep in mind!
