The Return of the King richly deserved the Oscar it got for costuming. In my own opinion, it had some of the best costumes in the entire trilogy.

    Some of my favorites:

Fountain Guard: My favorite costume from the entire trilogy. The Fountain Guards were brilliant, especially because they followed Tolkien's description without looking goofy. There's a very detailed analysis of their armor in The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare, which only drives home how incredible an outfit it is.

Witch-king: The Lord of the Nazgul was every bit as menacing as the books made him out to be. I liked the incorporation of the 'crown' into his helmet, in the form of those spikes around the brow. And of course, his morning star flail completed the ensemble spectacularly.

Aragorn's Armor: The armor Aragorn wears in front of the Black Gate is a wonderful epitomization of his rise from ranger to king. My favorite piece was the outer surcoat with the white tree and seven stars. The use of red in this costume was also very nice.

Arwen's 'Blood Sleeves' Gown: Speaking of red, this was another great use of it. I like how it's basically the same as Arwen's blue/silver gown earlier in the movie, a suggestion that, perhaps, they're really the same gown, its former elvish brightness faded to the colors of blood and death as Arwen's life force ebbs away. The lighting in Rivendell also seemed to make Arwen's face paler while she was wearing this. I hesitate to say she looked 'vampiric', but the impression was certainly one of a dying woman.

    What are your favorites?

Theoden's whole costume, including his armour and helm. Every part of his outfit connotes royalty. The rich greens and golds, the stunning level of detail in his helm and armour. Truly an outfit fit for a king.

The Fountain Guards and Aragorn's armor/costume in front of the Black Gate. The use of black velvet and leather of Aragorn's costume was really nice, and the deep red accents are just incredible. And the Fountain Guard costume, how much cooler can a door guard be??

#1 Witch King - Hands down my favorite "Bad guy" armor.

#2 Theoden's Battle Armor (Check out the Weta Workshop feature on the TT extended Apendices for superb detail on the construction of his armor)

#3 The Last Alliance Elven Armor

#4 Boromir's Fellowship Outfit - I love the small details in the different layers. Absolutely incredible!

dude how do you pick, all the armour was amazing but the stuff i liked the most was the gondorian use of wings. you read it in the book then you hear about a movie and you think how are they going to pull that off with out it looking stupid, then you see it and its amazing. the pinacle of it is the elendil helm in my opinion though the fountain guards look amazing to, heck the whole thing is amazing, lol.

Yes, the use of the seabird wings was done extremely well. As sacred to the Gondorian people, and the last link to their ancient Numenorean heritage, it makes sense that they would proudly emblazon it on their armor whenever possible. WETA did this wonderfully.

I definetly like the Witchking's costume. Just a pure evil design and wicked looking helmet.

Thoeden's costume was also cool. So was Aragorns.

My two favorites were the Ringwraiths. No comment about the black cloaks...

And Elrond's robes and other outfits during the different movies. I also have to admit that I like the Last Alliance armor of the Elves. Absolutely beautiful.

you know, the white tree? with the white feathers in there helmet?

Aleast, thats who I think they mean.

I think the best costumes of the trilogy were the Last Alliance elves. In ROTK, id say the best costume was the gondorian armour that all the soldiers wore.

its all good! I liked all the elven armour. Haldirs was nice with the red (symbolic?) and Aragorns ranger outfit was very believable for somone living out in the wilds and travelling, but the thing I liked most was the consummate attention to detail in all the costuming. Its so hard to choose.

I liked the Gondorian soldiers armor, especially Pippin's pint-sized version, and the Witchkings stuff was what topped RotK off (which i didn't like when i saw the first pictures of it way back), but the best armor was the Fell Beast's armor !!! And the trolls that came in through the broken gates of Minas Tirith !!! My personal fave from the whole trilogy was the Lorien Armor worn by Haldir in TTT !!!!
