The Return of the King richly deserved the Oscar it got for costuming. In my own opinion, it had some of the best costumes in the entire trilogy. Some of my favorites: Fountain Guard: My favorite costume from the entire trilogy. The Fountain Guards were brilliant, especially because they followed Tolkien's description without looking goofy. There's a very detailed analysis of their armor in The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare, which only drives home how incredible an outfit it is. Witch-king: The Lord of the Nazgul was every bit as menacing as the books made him out to be. I liked the incorporation of the 'crown' into his helmet, in the form of those spikes around the brow. And of course, his morning star flail completed the ensemble spectacularly. Aragorn's Armor: The armor Aragorn wears in front of the Black Gate is a wonderful epitomization of his rise from ranger to king. My favorite piece was the outer surcoat with the white tree and seven stars. The use of red in this costume was also very nice. Arwen's 'Blood Sleeves' Gown: Speaking of red, this was another great use of it. I like how it's basically the same as Arwen's blue/silver gown earlier in the movie, a suggestion that, perhaps, they're really the same gown, its former elvish brightness faded to the colors of blood and death as Arwen's life force ebbs away. The lighting in Rivendell also seemed to make Arwen's face paler while she was wearing this. I hesitate to say she looked 'vampiric', but the impression was certainly one of a dying woman.
