It's easy to see the same thing in terms of fantasy being presented so often it becomes cliche. So I wanted to know if there was any cool ideas any of you had that you would like to see further explored in the genre.

honestly I'd like to see more races then just the same three or four that are in all the major fantasy series'. to me it's fine to have them, but I feel authors need to broaden the spectrum a bit, and not by just making multiple types of the same race either. it's not really an idea, but just something I'd enjoy seeing.

One that I've been thinking of for a while but never doing anything about is the idea of having fantasy in our own world, in the form of the criminal (or vigilante) underworld.

There are dwarves and elves and orcs and wizards fighting for control of the underworld, sometimes with repercussions affecting “out” world, which is something they try to avoid as they must remain secret.

In the same idea as many of the modern books such as Twilight, City of Bones, etc, but not terrible, not based on angels or rich people. Maybe something to do with the druids of Britain, Ireland and France and all other high-fantasy style folklore from around the world, which is sort of like some Neil Gaiman books (and another that I can't quite place).

Yeah, a common idea but something different that can be made pretty fun, as whoever is imagining it could picture the places they know but in a fantasy setting. :)

I've always wanted to connect unsolved myths/mysteries of our world with fantasy
like having a whole forgotten story as to why something occurred or was there in the first place
    for example stone henge
maybe a race long extinct, with their history long lost were the reason for the mystery and they hold the key to the myth/mysteries answer

Sort of like the fact that Tolkien created Middle-earth as a history of our own world?

Having written 14 000 words on the topic, I quite like trying to see what from, from the author's setting, inspired her to create a given people/world/history.

    yeah a bit like tolkien
but not middle-earth style fantasy, something more time related
like a forgotten race, and an erased era or something that is connected to some mysterious unsolved object/thing in our world
an era that was erased from time for a reason, and erased from people's minds
    :D

So we only know of some few things that they left behind. Perhaps not all fairy tales are made up…

(not being too serious here; sort of like aliens building the pyramids and being worshipped).

hahaha aliens...I have never tried to write about aliens
nah...I was thinking more along the lines of like atlantis, a lost city, but instead make it a whole era, lost time

Fantasy that is very obviously "unrealistic" but which still follows some sense of wacky internal logic.

Fantasy should not try and be realistic.

I believe that it should be OK to add Greek style of societies into Fantasy along with medieval and samurai types. Tell me what does everyone think of Satyrs, fauns, and Minotaurs being in the same world of Elves, dwaves, orcs and men? How would that work?

Howard and his Hyborian age did this superbly, Atlantis and all.

How about a matriarchal nation/power that isn't basically a bunch of Amazons?

Yeah the Idea of an Elf in Spartan armor or Athenian armor is a neat concept.

What i miss are unique creatures with the looks and abilities we have not yet seen or heard before.. Also i would like magic to take bigger part in stories, kinda like in the name of the wind, so we actually get the impression of that magic isn't overpowered element, but dangerous and very hard if not impossible to achieve
