Which of these two ancient games do you like the most?

Chess can be very difficult but it's all in strategy.Backgammon is faster and requires less thinking and strategy but is also dependent on luck.

So which of these two noble games do you like the most, which of these would you actually buy or give to a friend of yours as a gift....which....is the one that rocks your world the most?

I barely played backgammon, I prefer chess. Not sure if I would buy it as a gift, though my girl's nephew really likes chess, so we could be buying him a star wars chess board lol

Hehe, when I saw this thread, I thought it could only have been started by Foin... Turns out I was right :D

Out of the two, Chess is clearly my favourite, if only for the reason I never played backgammon. I don't actually know the rules.

As a child, though, I played more draughts (checkers); mostly by International and Frisian rules. I was much better at this then I ever was then at chess. Chess mostly remained a frustration to me, as I'm easily outwitted on the chessboard (quite opposite to draughts...)

Interesting.I would love it if somebody bought me a nice chess board with medieval pieces.

By the way I recently actually won in Chess(using the level 1 difficulty setting :D)after playing so many games of Chess Titans. You know...when I bought this laptop a few weeks ago I saw that in the games Windows Vista had this really cool Chess Titans game and I knew nothing of chess so I started playing. But being used to backgammon I was trying to play fast and kept losing.

There are 10 difficulty levels and I played 44 games in the 2nd level(the default one)and didn't win not a single game. Then I changed it to level 1 difficulty and I played about 10 games...won 2 and also had a tie as well.I lost the rest!:p

But anyway, backgammon is played by far more people here and I like it too.Though I'm not the best played but I can play ok I guess.Best thing I managed to do in this game I did it when I was playing irl with a friend of mine and he was winning and there was no way for me to win.In order to win I had to roll 3 doubles in a row.And I did.You should see his expression when I won the game :p

I don't know how it is in other countries, but here the bishop is called the 'knight' so atheists would still have a full chessboard here!:D

If a bishop is called a knight, what's the knight called

The bishop I think is (or was) called The Elephant in some countries

Chess gets my vote ~ I'm not really that keen on games of chance.

Titan Chess is crazy; especially at the more difficult levels. I think I won a game at lvl 4 once. Lvl 2 is doable for me, but anything beyond I need a bit of luck to win :(

Chess gets my vote as well since I've more or less played it before in my school days. :)

On the Elephant term issue, I think that's in India since I believe India was the first country to play chess if I remember correctly.

On a side note, in Chinese chess, there's a chess piece with the same term in Chinese, but the term was actually refering to the Premier ranks of Chinese chess. Roughly the equivalent of the bishop altho the moving distance is different.

And anyone played Chinese chess yet? If any of you got a shot at it, you'll find that some of the words on the pieces are different from the aspect of the two colours plus the default formation is totally different from the usual version Western ppl played. ;)

When I posted this thread I seriously thought that Backgammon would get most of the votes and I was worried that Chess wouldn't get more than 1 vote...now I see it's the other way around.

Well you don't have to guess who voted for Backgammon.I did because I've actually played it more than chess and I am better at it than I am in chess. And also because backgammon is far more popular here. But I've been playing Chess for a few days now and yes Turambar you are right man,Chess Titans is so hard!

The Bishop doesn't exactly look like a Knight. Not with that little cardinal type hat lol

Chess Titans is hard, mainly because I really hate thinking far ahead.

    Lvl1 - 1 game - 1 win - 100% Win Rate
    Lvl2 - 9 games - 2 win - 22% Win Rate

As you can see....I've yet to get used to level 2 LOL. I used to be fairly good aswell...seems like I'm too impatient

When I was young, I never knew that it was called the bishop in english, so I never gave much thought of its shape. I just knew it was called 'de ridder' (the knight... obviously) ... Also I would sometimes get confused which piece was the king and which piece was the queen lol. Besides I have star wars chessboards these days (d'uh) ... Han Solo doesn't look like a bishop either:D
