Dalamar went to Nuitari because "Nuitari made no promises so he broke none." he already saw what Paladine allowed the highlords to do to his people. he saw many of his people die with Paladine's name on their lips, but did they get saved? he scorns the gods of good because he thinks they use the Silvanesti like game pieces on a board. even if he had been allowed to study white magic, he would have gone to black soon.

Hell yeah he did! But then you can throw his little training with the white into it...... he was given a glimpse, a promise, only to have had it robbed from him. I think this could have lead to his belief that no promises is a beneficial thing.

I found Raistlin's character interesting. While a bit over done in the Legends series, I thought that his was a good portrayal of a misguided, yet powerful man, trying desperately to get what he wants. Though it would appear that he didn't really know what he wanted in the end.

I think Raistlin had his goals in mind, however Caramon seeing into the future showed him what was to come and that was something Raistlin had no desire for.

I wonder if Raistlin could have defeated Chaos if he had completed his massacre of the Gods? Maye that is discussed in the books somewhere but I dont remember it.

He said himself that he doubted. In Summer Flame, he goes as far as to say he was glad he wasn't in the god's situation..... but one could argue, if he had ascended and killed the gods, would Chaos have been released?

if he almost got killed fighting the Dark Queen, Chaos would probably beat the crap out of him. but if he really HAD become a god, I believe he would be a suitable match for Chaos.

I don't think Raistlin is evil in the traditional sense of the word.

Raistlin just is without pity and compassion. He is ambitious and will not let someone stand in his way to power, but he doesn't go out of his way to cause pain and suffering. He doesn't enjoy hurting people he just doesn't mind doing it if it must be done.

As I recall the battle wasn't going bad for Raistlin, it was just going bad for Krynn, and the collateral damage got to him and he gave up.

This is most likely why Raist is the most loved character of DL. In a way, every has the same hunger - just with morals attatched to it.
His attemtp to close the portal after Caramon carried Crysiania through is proof that his soul isn't black.

I agree. As I remember in Tas' vision of the future Raistlin had already claimed the status of a god and was about to defeat the last god, Paladine. He only attacked Takhisis though, the rest attacked him when he defeated her.

Well that's not entirely accurate. We found in Test of the Twins that Raist does in fact care about other people. Else why send Caramon and Crysiania home to be tortured for eternity when he could have easily left?

actually, Raistlin does care for people. he has just been badly wounded in both body in soul in his life and that has stamped out the compassion in him. Caramon's love stifled him and drove him to prove that he didn't need his brother or anyone else to survive in the world. he's always had the lust for respect, for people to admire and fear him, partly because in his childhood nobody did. he's always had a soft spot for gully dwarves because they represented the weaker part of him - making him remember how when he was young he received the scorn and disdain of his peers and how everybody kept pushing him down and not taking him for what he really was worth.

Yeah. When he was young, he did everything he could to be admired and respected by his peers, much like Caramon was. In a sick way, he looked up to Caramon.

And at the same time, loathed him for what he was given that Raist wasn't.

the birth twins instead of one healthy son was not an accident. if Raistlin hadn't been frail and sickly, he would have had the option to become a swordsman like his sister instead of a mage

But with his quick mind, with his hungry ambition, one could wonder, given the option, which would Raistlin choose. I think he still would have chosen the power of a mage.

There's no doubt in my mind at all that Raistlin would have chosen to don the robes rather than mail. It's in his blood.
