The all mighty Raistlin! *bends knee for the King of Evil*
*bends knee besides Adina for the King of Evil* He has to be my favorite character of all time!!! He is just so complex and intelligent...I just love his personality and how he degrades everyone around him!!! Even though he was physically weak he was powerful in mind and magic!!!! Raistlin my Shilafi!!!
Lol, well said. I think Weis and Hickman did a marvellous job building his character. I have never found another to be quite as frightening in ability and respected in knowledge.
His slyness amazes me still. There seems so much more to him that we could have imagined.
The way he uses people, places and things for his own development is great. His hunger for power and knowledge is outstanding.
When he took over the tower of High Scorcery, it just seemed to fit perfectly.
I loved how he was able to just use his reputation to overpower people...the great caterpilius (hey it protected their weapons didn't it lol)...as well as when he went to see Usha when he didn't have any powers and was able to scare everyone out of the theives guild cause someone recognized him as Raistlin!!!
All Hail the Master!
I loved how he keeps confusing everyone with his illusionist tricks, especially when he tricked Fistandantilus. I was laughing in the old man's face
When they were travelling as an illusion show and Raistlin was head of the party, you couldn't help but feel so proud for him hehe
yeah and all the townsfolk loved him. I liked him in the Soulforge, when he was neutral still. I would have liked to see the look on Antimode's face when he found out that his saintly student later became the greatest mage of evil that ever walked Ansalon!
It's great to focus on Raistlin's evil.... but he was redeemed. He isn't as twisted with ambition as everyone gives him credit for. He is still the ultimate mage in my books, and none shall surpass him in terms of intellegence, wit, and straightup determination. From what I understand, Dalamar could surpass him in terms of raw power, but even Dalamar admits he'll never be the mage Raistlin was. Odds on favourite of any who view this thread.
That's true, he was redeemed but you can't take his twistedness of him. His drive to gain all is what forms him.
As far as Dalamar is in comparison, he is what he is because of his Shalafi. I hope to see more of Dalamar in the new series.
Dalamar is my personal recent favourite............ he's so............... cool............... in a sly sophisticated way that Raistlin couldn't match.
Raistlin? Not matching sly/sophisticated??? Are you sure you're reading dragonlance?
I'll give you props anyway because Dalamar is slowly getting there, but he'll never match Raistlin in hunger.
That's right...we don't call Raistlin the King of Evil for nothin', he got that name because of his sly and sophisticated personality!!! And Dalamar will forever walk in Raistlin's Shadow!!!
While Raistlin was certainly more sly than Dalamar, he is clearly not as sophisticated and cultured. Two things make me think this. First, Dalamar is Silvan born, and the Silvanesti are the most cultured race on Krynn. Second, while Raistlin is even tempered, he has been known to explode with rage, either cold rage or explosive. Dalamar on the other hand usually maintains a cool facade no matter what situation arises, and always keeps his anger in check. Don't get me wrong, Raistlin is the better mage, but he's not as sophisticated as Dalamar.
I must admit, you've made me think about this quite a lot.
You are right about Raistlin and his not being able to control his temper ALL the time but I found him reasonably able when he needed to be. With the companions, I don't think he felt he needed to because they were all so beneath him anyway. On the other hand, if the situation called for calmness, he knew how to show that on the exterior.
Dalamar. Well I found him somewhat weak in the Legends Trilogy. Without giving away spoilers (because I know a few ppl haven't read past those yet), I know that will not always be so. At first though, I found him to be weak because of how he was with other people. We have this preconceived idea that 'black mages' are short tempered etc etc, but Dalamar wasn't.
As far as the sophistication goes, I suppose you are right. While Raistlin was living as a young boy being tortured - mind and body - and what not else, Dalamar was learning the key stills needed to live a cultured life. I do wish we could hear more about his parting when he took the black.
Raistlin is the best. Dalamar isn't quite evil, in my opinion.
in my opinion Dalamar's soul is more dedicated to Nuitari. Raistlin was never entirely evil, which was demonstrated more clearly in the Soulforge. but Dalamar's heart was centered on the dark arts from the very beginning. it was because of the elven laws did he wear white robes instead of black.
Raistlin wasn't loyal to any of the three. He was loyal to himself. I think Dalamar would have been good if he could have studied white magic more than servents were allowed. The only reason he turned to evil was because he found the powerful magic books. Had they been good or neutral, he would have been good or neutral.
Care to back that up WB?
Sure. Read Dalamar the Dark. There's several refrences to Dalamar's love of magic while in Silvanesti. Nuitari offered him magic in exchange for obedience, and Dalamar willingly submitted with all of his heart. No doubt he'd have done the same if Solinari made the same offer.
Thanks Vandral. I like too see a bit of fact behind what people think
