Yea I think they are beautiful. They have a certain quality that broad swords or other weapons don't have.

competition means that they are qualified to take part in tamashigiri (hope I got the name right) which is the art of cutting tatami mats and in some cases bamboo.

I've read some good things about Hanwei swords by Paul Chen taking in account their pricing. He's got (what seems to me, yet that should be taken with a grain of salt since I neither own or held one) pretty cheap differentially tempered Katana and Wakisashi (the practical series), then the same but with more authentic fittings so you can take it apart (practical plus). Then there are some very nice ones that come pretty close to authentic ones in looks, yet they are not folded (though forged and differentially tempered / clay treatenend) e.g. Shinto series, Golden oriole series etc. He's also got folded steel swords from swedish powder steel.

Can anyone tell me what the real difference between the practical plus series and the shinto/golden oriole are? Does anyone own any of these swords and can you tell me if their quality lives up to their price?

The Shinto/Golden Oriole are FAR better quality than the PPK. The preason they use the term 'practical" is that they are using money saving features to lower the overall cost, like imitation leather, rayskin, crystaline appearence on the hamon, so forth.

I dont know exactly what do you mean with good price, cause it depends if the sword worth it, if you agree to pay a large amount of money, lets say $999.00 for a really good cuality katana I have to say that Bugei katanas are one of the best options.

Yeah the Bugei katanas look really nice, and since they show videos of them cutting, no doubt about the quality... and I just realized that their katanas are actually Paul Chen blades, not that that's a bad thing, just news to me.

Yes, Bugei has their production blades made by Hanwei (Paul Chen forge). However, they work in conjuction with Hanwei. All of their blades are specifically made to the strictest of standards put forth by the guys at Bugei.

When the swords are shipped over, the staff at Bugei (professional polishers, bladesmiths and martial artists) inspect the blades for quality control. If any of the blades are below par, they are sent back to the Hanwei forge to be remade. As a result, some customers may have a long wait as their blade may have been sent back because it did not meet the minimum standards.

Believe me, the Bugei blades are aesthetically beautiful as well as fully functional for cutting.

I have worked in retail (specifically in cutlery), selling swords for a few years now (almost 9). I have yet to have been personally able to handle any better weapon than those made by Cas-Iberia / Hanwei forge. I have handled a large selection of them, and own more than a few. I recommend these to anyone looking for a sword, of any variety, that is fully functional as well as aesthetically beautiful.

This isn't to down-play any other company, it's just to say that I have yet to handle any other company's weapons that compare for both beauty and funtionality.
