Yeah. Reading is better. First, I like to pay attention to how terrible the author's writing is and critique the Hell out of it as I read. Second, sometimes a sentence requires a moment's reflection to be assimilated, but audio books don't afford you that respite.

I am not terribly attracted to audiobooks. I prefer the traditional deal.

I once thought about creating some audiobooks from my work - in order to make it easily available to visually impaired people. I even performed a machine conversion from the text to a wave file. I didn't like the result.

If you're spending time critiquing a writer's prose, then make better reading choices.
Read stuff like The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, by Michael Chabon (winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction). Michael Chabon's stories will make you laugh, cry, and something deep inside you will change forever.

Yeah, but, you boycott Star Wars movies and built a VIP-worthy box for Harry Potter audio books, so why would I listen to you, Sparrow?!

LOL. I DO still have The Diamond Age on my to-research list, though. And that other Golden Compass one.

I'm about finished the second Malazan book, by the way. It IS recommendable, I decided, so long as you like military strategy, violence, and wartime philosophical musings. It was a bit masculine at first for my taste, but Duiker and Coltaine finally made me give a fuck about things with penises.

    Thanks for the tip! :)

Oh wow...that is lovely! I think we need to see more pictures of the inside of your house, Sparrow. With all the great stuff you make I'll bet it's quite spectacular.

I love audiobooks, though I tend to read along with the narrator.
I'm currently listening to/reading Mossflower, will probably do the same for the entire Redwall series.

They were great for when I was driving a long way for my previous job. I found I could listen to the story without losing focus on driving.
However I found them useless for being at home with wife and kids around as, unlike reading a book, I'm wearing earplugs and have to hit Pause every time someone wants to talk to me, which gets annoying.

This threads interesting because as a writer I've seen the rise of audiobooks. Yet relatively few authors do them. I've thought of doing one myself, can anyone act? xD

Well I can act as my-self, so if you write me in your books, I would gladly voice myself

Oh my, I'm so addicted to audio books as well. I hardly read anymore! Listen listen listen. When I do the laundry, when I go to the fitness, when I go to bed, etc etc. I always listen to English ones, though, although I'd prefer to listen to Dutch ones as well every once in a while. The thing is, they don't have audio books in my own Flemish accent (from Belgium). I don't like the Dutch accent that much (The Netherlands).

I got Oddy hooked up on audiobooks, now you're addicted too.
I feel like I'm a drug pusher, except it's not illegal narcotics... it's listening to books!

That's how I feel though; real books are just a gateway drug to audiobooks, the hard stuff. Now though, I need to come up with a slick slang term for audiobooks. You know, illegal drugs all have street names, like Heroin is called "Hard H"... uhm, audiobooks could be "Ear Candy"... that's not really tough enough. I'll think on it.

Anyhow, I feel like that guy from Breaking Bad.
I'm not a bad person, I just do bad things.

    I love audio books!
I have so little time for myself that every book a read become a self torture 'can i relay afford the time i spend on reading?'
The audio books allow me to enjoy more 'reading' while in traffic. And i'm spending a lot of time in traffic. also i listen to books while doing boring jobs, like mowing the lawn, or cleaning the house, etc.
If i enjoy the audio book i usually will buy the paper back book so i'll have a copy in my library.
The only thing i have against audio books is the readers. they become very important for the final product. there are few audio books that I couldn't listen to only because i didn't like what the reader did with them (sounded too happy, too tired, or just too 'something' that didn't fit to my imagination for the story). Sometimes its exactly the opposite; a book that i placed down because i thought it to be slow, seamed fantastic as an audio book...
So, bottom line- I love audio books!
