I refused to believe that Eddard was dead for the longest time! I know it sounds stupid but I just could not get over it. I fully believed that it was some random ragged man who looked like him or at least, I convinced myself that this was so. I remember my the first of my doubts coming due to his last POV chapter. :faceit:

Anyone else had any similarly silly thoughts?

i did not want to believe either. i remember i kept awaiting deus ex machina as the headsman raised ice in prelude of the decisive stroke. utter disbelief. to this day even.

what made the death of ned stark so real and therefore effective is that he had a powerful story that went untold. it was more than the loss of a personality, it was the loss of history, of what may have been.

Eddard was one of my fav characters.

i still hate robert, for indirectly causing it, among other reasons.

I refues as well, especially with the 'look away' pov from arya, I hadnt realised how much GRRM hates his readers untill he started killing off all the good characters...

indirectly causing it? might as well blame every character in the book for not stopping it, robert had nothing to do with it, Ned was his closest friend, if he werent so fat I'm sure robert would have turned in his grave.

Yeah... I think this was the moment I realised that ASOIAF was a hell of a lot different to any fantasy I'd read 'till then.
Nah, I'm with Cru on that. There's plenty of other reasons to hate Robert but this isn't one of them - there's no way he could have predicted what happened.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one. However that event was the event to staple firmly in our minds that unless you play the game, in this world, you'll die or worse.

I understand what you are saying. Robert's inability to be a king did lead to him asking Eddard to be the hand. So his asking began the events which lead up to Eddard death but we can't really be pissed at that because well otherwise... We wouldn't have the story :duh:

    Robert fanboi =/

One thing I'll say about ASoIaF - it makes me laugh a lot, but it makes me cry a lot too. D: One of the most terrible moments in the books IMO - as Volks mentioned, it was the loss of all that "might have been." Also, the loss of his secrets had a profound impact on the series as well - one of the many reasons why GRRM is such a brilliant author.
