    Wood.
    Wood is your pal.
    Carve some wood.
    Wood wood wood wood...
It's quite easy, get a piace of wood, take dimensions and carve.
Also you'll be able to hit people with it and it won't break.
Not to mention if you make it out of paper mache, all the blood would soak thrue the paper and then you'd end up with a fairly large ball of mush.

And paper isn't?Do you know how much pain I could inflict with a simple A2 slip of paper?

How about aluminium?Or perhaps make a wireframe and coat it with something?

"attendees may not carry or possess any working weapon at any time during the convention. The definition of working weapon includes, but is not limited to: firearms and ammunition of any and all sorts (BB guns, pellet guns, cap guns, air-soft weapons, paintball guns), tazers, explosives, knives, swords (including katanas, bokken and other martial arts style swords), daggers, sword canes, switchblades, fireworks or fire-crackers, axes, hatchets, clubs, silly string, martial arts weapons, brass knuckles, chains, pepper spray, mace and any other projectile item, toy or real. Firearms that have the firing pin removed or are otherwise modified to be made nonfunctional are still considered "real weapons" and are not permitted.

Bows are allowed only if they are rendered incapable of firing a projectile, and arrows must have blunt tips. Props constructed using metal, hard wood, fiberglass, glass or hard plastics are not allowed, even if wrapped in or covered by a softer material, such as cloth.

Sharp edges are not permitted on and material. Generally, if the weapon or prop breaks when it hits someone, there's a good chance it'll be allowed; If someone breaks when the weapon or prop hits them, please leave it at home.

"Hard" wood, so use soft wood.
And fiberwire is not techically metal, it's metal coverd with rubber.

Get some of the 2" thick foam board insulation from a home repair store. It can be carved easily, it is light and pretty durable. I have used it for alot of things similar. Once it is shaped you can paint it. (use a latex paint and brush. Not spraypaint.) The foam usualy comes in pink or blue, so you need a good thick layer to cover it. I have tried spraypaint, I dont know if its the aerosols in it or what, but in damages the surface.

yeah that's what I was thinking before.... but I might go with a soft wood I just talked to the convention weapons policy guy and he said some soft woods are okay and he gave me some examples. My bf said he'd cut it for me so as long as it's not too expensive I might do that. we shall see.... thanks for the suggestions =^_^=

You can heat a simple knife, not only will it get cut, it will also have a glazed look about it.

EDIT: DON'T FORGET TO USE A MASK AND DO IT OUTSIDE!

    A long cutting knife.
The mask you need because once the foam is burned, it gives of some mesed up fumes, you don't want to cough the whole convention, do you?

Make sure the knife is smooth, as in it's not a saw like knife but a smooth knife, the saw one would just make the things fly all over and you'd end up with a sword that's full of holes.

Umm, my kitchen knifes do have a straight edge...but yes, it shouldn't be rippled because it will take out chunks.

btw. are we talking regular foam or styrofoam?

more than likely I'm going to see if I can get my hands on some foamular or styrospan. It's a harder type foam that hopefully wont pull apart if I drag it lightly on a carpet....

I think though what I might do is make a wooden one out of light wood and if they say anything about it I'll have a backup cardboard one and put the wood one in the car.... I just don't know how I'm going to make the handle.... or make it sturdy enough that it won't bend

Soft wood is easy to manipulate, you can just get a long-ish metal and stab it into the wood, that way they won't see that it has metal and it will be quite sturdy.
