A new thread to discuss what anime you are watching, recommend other anime etc. Has anyone seen the new Ghibli film 'Arrietty' yet? I really want to see it but haven't gotten around to it.

I highly recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain. Other pretty good ones are Baccano!, Mirai Nikki, Steins: Gate, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo.

Ghibli stuff is great, I still really dig Totoro and Spirited Away. Grave of the Fireflies is really moving too.

Also Fist of the North Star, but it takes awhile for it to really get jammin' but when it does it is like, whoa.

I think most of the ones I mentioned are on Hulu if you haven't seen them. Fist of the North Star which is one of my favorites though, requires a very specific set of tastes. I started watching it for the silly catch phrases and villains, but then it suddenly became like an epic tragedy odyssey with kung fu.

Lain and NGE are 2rad because they tackle really interesting identity crisis kind of stuff and have really good character development for the main characters.

I could ramble more about the others if you are interested, but those three are my top recommendations.

    Hulu doesn't work in Australia.

I actually have Lain but have never watched it. Someone gave it to me ages ago. I should get around to watching that eventually.

Rats, darn national media conglomerates/laws not having/allowing universal accessibility.

I highly recommend Lain, I had to watch it twice to really get the gist of it though. I don't think I finished it the first time through though. but even seeing past midway and rewatching the beginning really helped.

Yeah damn, how could I forget to mention Akira. One day I want to read the manga for that one too.

Mononoke, Berserk, and Ghost In The Shell are on my bucket list.

The last thing I watched was some Sword Art Online and it was really average. Pretty cliche too.

Arrietty is magical. While Hayao Miyazaki didn't direct this one, he did script and storyboard it, and it shows.

Loved Evangelion. And I've seen the first two movies in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. Awesome stuff! The artistry and animation are exquisite!

All fantastic films. Grave of the Fireflies had me full on weeping at the end. That almost never happens! :D

Couldn't get into Samurai Champloo, I'm afraid, but Cowboy Bebop is one of my favourite anime series of all time!

I've always wanted to check this one out even though I've read that it's a poor man's Evangelion. What did you think of it, AA?

All awesome, and Howl's Moving Castle is my favourite ever animated film. I get something new every time I watch it. It's amazing! And Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis is jaw droppingly good. The city alone is enjoyably fifties, retro sci-fi, and the art design sumptuous. I feel like they captured Tezuka's "pulp" storytelling sensibility beautifully.

It's truly stunning, isn't it? It's a real landmark in the history of animated film. And I love the percussive soundtrack too.

I would personally recommend Samurai 7, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Porco Rosso, and My Neighbours the Yamadas. :)

Yess the soundtrack of Akira is amazing! I still get chills whenever I watch that first motorbike chase scene at the start. Neo Tokyo is a city built on madness and chaos that even rivals Nolan's Gotham.

Hmm lets see now I've seen:

    Cowboy Bebop
    Wolf's Rain
    Ergo Proxy
Ghost in the shell - both films and both SAC series and the mini SAC film
    Eflin Lied
    Princess Mononoke
    Grave of the Fireflies
    Laputa Castle in the Sky
    The Cat Returns
    Spirited Away
    Nausicaa Valley of the Wind
    Sky Blue
    Read or Die
Hellsing both the original series and most of the newer (missed the last few bits).

And I've seen bits of and mean to see the rest of
    Claymore le;
    Samuri Champloo

I've seen one or two others I'm sure but their names escape me for the moment. Generally for me I prefer my Anime more on the serious side of animation style whilst those "cutsy" elements I don't like (or at least I prefer if they only appear in a "cutsy" style anime - as opposed to say where they appear in the newer Hellsing series).

rahxephon maybe is but it is completly different to evangelion. Worth a watch. I'd say Fullmetal Panic is more so a poor mans evang.
If you want to watch a nice mecha that isnt a real mecha watch blue gender. It is amazing.
As for howls moving castle.. It is my least favourite out of all my animes.

Ovveread I also started watching Claymore at one point but didn't finish it. I enjoyed it though. I'm not too sure why I stopped. I've planned on starting it again and watching it through once more for a while.

Claymore is an ongoing manga and the anime ends prematurely so it is kind of a letdown. It was pretty interesting too.
