Well...ok so I am somewhat confused.

I am trying to change my avatar, but it says that I may not upload animated avatars.

Is this something that has been blocked? Can you use it via url? Or will we never be able to use animated avatars again.

N.B. My current avatar had already been uploaded.

With the new upgrade, avatars can't be more than 2G. Maybe your animated avatar was over that.

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 2.00 GB (whichever is smaller).

See, that's from the update avatar page. Hey, I don't know if Met's avy is movie-like or not. :p

Whoa. You can go upto 2GB on an avatar? That's literally close to 2 movies :S

No but seirously. My avatar I wanted uploaded is 10.6kb and is 100*100. So I don't see the problem :S

I don't get it...sky comes to my thread and says that avatars can only be 100 kb...and I even broke that rule (altho he didn't mind much) by going over that...

    Mini rant/

The reason for putting limits on avatar and banner sizes is simple.

    Common sense.

Some people have it. Some people don't.

Nobody wants to come to a forum and want to read a reply to their post, only for the forum to take forever to load, just because someone wants to have a 3 MB animated avatar. Really.

It's an annoyance, even when you're on a T1 line like I am at work.

It costs. Every time someone visits the site, the file gets downloaded, it pushes up the bandwidth usage of the site and drives up the cost, the need to make up revenue, and the need for more banner ads.

If people had common sense, people would have a little restraint. But many don't, hence rules and limits are put into place. I find it ironic that many times the people asking "WTF is up with the banner ads?" are often the people with the largest avatars and banners.

    /mini rant

I have been reluctant to post formal hard and fast limits on banner and avatar sizes in the Rules.

For one simple reason. If I do, I'll have to start enforcing it. If I start enforcing it, it'll invariably get ugly. Right now, if I threw the number "100kb" out there verbally, and a 110kb file is put up, I can let it slide and not have to be a dick and delete it.

But if I formally write the rules (ie take away the ability for people to use common sense), at 101kb it's deleted. Why? Because if I don't, I'll get a PM from someone with nothing better to do crying "So and so's banner/avatar is too big".

Met, as for your inability to post up an animated avatar, it may be possible that permissions have been changed to disallow new animated avatars to be uploaded. I don't know, I haven't got access to that setting AFAIK.

Those that have existing animated avatars may very well be forewarned that should they remove their present animated one they might not be able to upload a new one.

No... Here is how you do it.

    First
-You need to CREATE the animation.
    -Don't use too much space.
-You will need equipment to make these animations -- lashdes, SWiSH or something.

    Next
    -Go to file
    -Save AS
    -Put the title
    -Choose where to save
-Change FILE TYPE to .jpg or jpeg
    -save
    -Upload as Avatar
