I really liked Wheel of Time, did you read that yet?? You should... its a good one because it keeps you busy for at least.. I dunno a month?? lol... and make fun of Robert Jordan all you like but its a good series!! I always just had WoT and another book on the go at the same time, so when I needed a break from WoT I'd just read the other book for a bit. It works good that way :) And hey, maybe all the books will be done by the time your ready for the last ones?? (And RJ isnt like the author of Game of Thrones... he didnt finish his books because he DIED! And plus it takes time to write 15 books!)

I have to say I've also found that blurb writers have a particular talent for making any fantasy book sound silly in just the space of a handful of lines. Fantasy just doesn't work when you try to explain it - even worse when you try in only 3 or 4 sentences.

Jacqueline Carey. You'd also probably like Juliet Marillier. That being said, I really haven't read much fantasy lately, other than the odd Pratchett book.

Also, Rach', what would you do in this situation? The boy's promised to watch GoT with me, but he also hasn't read any of the books yet. Should I make him read them before or after the first season, and should I give them ASAP or for Christmas?

Make him read them - otherwise you'll be trapped in a small hell of not being able to chat about anything without fear of revealing massive plot devices - plus you can both chuckle over missing parts and stuff

I agree 100%. Also, you risk looking like a total lunatic when something happens that wasn't in the book or something doesn't happen that was in the book and you flip your sh!t. Because you know we're all gonna be on the edge of our seats when the pilot airs ready to pick it apart. At least if he's read the book there's a chance he'll be equally obsessed and won't think you're totally crazy. ;)

Oh, but Christmas gift would be okay. If he can't read it in 3 or 4 months, you need a new boyfriend anyway.

PS - You have a boyfriend?! When were you planning on telling me young lady?!

Now, duh! :D Trying to avoid the whole "UPDATE FACEBOOK" garbage etc. Only cool people get to know. ;) Was also more-or-less waiting out the first few months to see if it'll go anywhere since it's a long distance relationship.

But I told him I'll make him read it. lol. Already looking forward to when he finishes it--I'm pretty sure that he'll love the books. :)

Thinking about Christmas gift but that's too far away. I need something to do and I need it NOW. I think I'll make him buy it this weekend.

Good call! One can never start ASoIaF too soon. Besides, the new readers should have to suffer the wait for ADWD with us.

It's part of the appeal. If you can make it to the next book without pulling your hair out, you're a true fan. Anyone ever wonder if Martin does it on purpose? Maybe he's just toying with us. It's like a little challenge.

I'd think it's more like "when" you pull your hair out. I mean, no Goodkind fans ever pull out their hair over the fate of Richard.

No crap. Richard isn't going to get beheaded without notice in the middle of a Goodkind book.

Yeah, I think I've managed to get a few people interested in following the HBO series, at least. REALLY looking forward to it.

    Rachel, only for you:

    * Something for female fans to look forward to: “I lie naked in furs,” Momoa (Khal Drogo) says of his Genghis Khan-like character’s standard operating procedure. “I think I’m naked more than I talk.”

"The good characters are so good and the bad characters are sooo bad." Pretty much exactly what my friends all said to me before I started the series. But I love it. It's just not like your typical fireball-wielding fantasy series. It's nice to have something a little more stark and personal to read.

What? Me? Like naked Drogo? I don't know what you're talking about.

    Guess it beats pedo-lovin' Gendry.
