Dragonlance Movie

Oh wouldn't it be nice?

I saw a preview for a Dragon show on Animal Planet (cable channel run by Discovery about animals). If a cheap cable show can afford decent Dragon special effect shots then a movie could be made.

Obviously Weta did a great job with the Nazgul Fellbeast riders.

Can you imagine some of the aerial battles from Dragonlance? The ground battles? Sturm's death?

Obviously New Line has shown that there is an audience for fantasy movies, and they have also shown that if you put in the money and pay attention to detail that you will be rewarded.

The D&D movie from 2000 obviously sucked, so anyone who worked on that lemon would need to be banned from Dragonlance. Hopefully that taught an important lesson -- namely that you cannot sacrifice story and attention to detail if you want your movie to be good.

The next great fantasy series seems to be Narnia, and Weta is doing that as well. Already the clips look great.

Once that is done it'd be nice if Dragonlance was developed and Weta worked on it. Honestly, it'd have to be Weta, no one else does such good work. They'd also need to have Weis & Hickman involved with the storyline. I would hate for the story to be ruined by some idiot writer with a bunch of cliche one-liners.

Apparently someone has bought the rights to make the films.

Dragonlance-Movie.com has existed for a number of years now and they track rumors about the film.

Personally, for me, this series could dethrone LOTR if the movies were made right.

It is bold, but it is also possible. I willingly admit that LOTR's screen adaptation is almost unbeatable, but there always is the possibility that something can do better. The Dragonlance saga is a very well written story, with a lot that would be exciting to see on the big screen. I'd love to see it!

That would be amazing if done correctly. I read these books soooooo long ago I hardly remember them. I guess I'm going to have to find them and give'em another read.

It would be amazing. But they'd have to do the characters right. If they would make Sturm cocky, or Raistlin nice the entire movie would be ruined for me.

I fear more them turning Caramon into a cliche big dumb guy. Caramon is not homer simpson.

Mostly they have to avoid anything campy.

I've heard rumours of it, but like the rumours of a Drizzit movie, nothing substantial has been put forward.

Dear friends,

In answer to the questions on the board, here`s what I can tell you about
the DL movie.

A production company has optioned Dragonlance for a live action,
big-budget movie. According to what we hear, the people who run the
company are long-time fans.

We were told by WoTC that we could make this announcement at Gen Con,
which we did. We`re not allowed to say anything else for the moment.

As soon as we can tell you more, I promise we will! Keep watch on
dragonlance.com.

So there you have it. I guess we just have to wait and see. I did read an interesting article that stated that DL is in no way near the the same literary standing as LOTR. Maybe so, maybe not. Again, I suppose we will just have to wait and see.

I can't think of anyone really good to cast. It's been funny to imagine though. Who would you cast as the companions?

I'd like to see Johnny Depp take a shot at Raistlin..... he's such a good character actor, it'd be interesting to see if he could pull it off.
