Fairytales
What are your favorite fairytales and why? What do you like about them?
One of my alltime favorite stories is Sleeping Beauty. I think I have always loved the idea of having time pass quickly (such as while sleeping), while waiting for Prince Charming to get all his ducks in a row. I also love the idea of The Prince loving Sleeping Beauty so much that he fought the biggest evil around at that time to get to her. I also love Beauty and the Beast. The thought of loving someone through all their faults until one day they actually become the person you saw inside! I think when I was younger, I leaned more towards the romantic side of fairytales, but now that I am older, I can see so much more to a story than I used to. Anyway, I have rambled enough, what do you have to say? ![]()

Re: Fairytales
It's been a long time, but I remember reading Snow White and Rose Red, I think I liked that one...I cannot remember what it was about exactly though. Hmmm.....

Re: Fairytales
I have 2 of them. Those would be Rumpelstiltskin (Grimm version), and Rapunzel ( Grimm version). When I was little I had a book of Grimm's fairytales. It had like a hundred stories in it if I remeber right.

Re: Fairytales
Thank you Emppress, great minds think alike. Have you ever read the one about the Little Matchstick Girl? I am not sure who the author is, but my mom would read it to me when I was little. It was such a sad story. It was a beautifully written.

Re: Fairytales
I probably liked "Hansel and Gretal" the best - ironically, because it terrified me. To have your own parents take you out in the woods with the intent to get you lost, and you KNOW that they're doing this...and then you find a way to survive, only to fall into the hands of a witch who wants to eat you?
Sound reflection on the trials and tribulations of growing up!! |

Re: Fairytales
My favorite was always The Little Mermaid, the real version not the disney one. Sacrificing her life and happiness for the one she loves...can't beat that for a love story.

Id have to say Beauty and the Beast, it always held a special importance for me, especially what the story is trying to tell you... Beauty is found within

Re: Fairytales
Quote:
These are not what you would consider classic fairytales, but L.M. Montgomery who wrote The Anne of Green Gables series, also wrote a book called The Story Girl. I read that when I was younger and there is a story in there about "The First Kiss" and also a story about when you see a long white cloud in the sky. "The First Kiss," in her depiction starts with a young girl who is given a stone to hold in her mouth and she may never drop it herself for fear of death, however, someone else may take the stone from her on one condition...he must use his own lips. So she waits and waits and finally her handsome hero comes along and removes the stone with his lips, thus the first kiss. It was well written by Montgomery! The other was more of a horror than a fairytale. A self-centered princess wanted only the best of men for herself and to her it would be the man who conquered every other man. Years went by and she passed the time by making her wedding veil while men fought to the death for her hand. Finally one day, a dark figure rode to the palace where she lived and told her that she was his bride, she did not see his face, and was inwardly terrified, but she went through with the wedding. When they reached his home of barren wasteland, tombs and bones, he revealed himself to her that he was the only one who could conquer all men, he was Death! Now when you see a long white cloud on the horizon, it is her wedding veil to remind young women to see all men as hero's. I like those stories, you might too if you have not read any of her works, she has a romantic but very dark side to her!

Re: Fairytales
Yes you are right, The Little Matchstick Girl was by Hans Christen Anderson. I had a large book of his fairytales when I was little. Including The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling etc

Re: Fairytales
Robin Hood stands out in my mind. That cartoon version totally rawked! I still have the vhs
![]() I used to love the little mermaid too but I think it was more based on the songs in it. I named my cat Ariel too, but that never stuck.
